The mission of the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs is to protect the health, safety, economic interests, and quality of life of residents, businesses, and visitors in the District of Columbia by issuing licenses and permits, conducting inspections, enforcing building, housing, and safety codes, regulating land use and development, and providing consumer education and advocacy services.

Today I was hanging posters in Mt. Pleasant for the upcoming Mayor’s visit to the next MPNA Monthly meeting.

I saw Mr. Ferrifino, owner of Don Juan’s, tear the poster down that I had just hung at 17th Street and Lamont. I since have hung another but if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn’t have believed it.

Our November MPNA meeting was a great success and well attended, including many visitors from outside our neighborhood.

Enclosed and attached are the meeting annoucements made that night.

Mt. Pleasant Neighborhood Alliance Community Announcements – Nov. 19, 2007

All Hands Christmas and Holiday Tree Sale: Saturday, December 8 at Bancroft Elementary. The officers of our PSA 301 will present Winter Wonderland Christmas in the Park from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Santa’s sleigh will be gliding through the hood around noon time at the Annual Bancroft Elementary School Holiday Tree Sale. This year, the sale will take place on December 8 and 9 from 10 - 4 p.m. (or until they run out of trees). This is the biggest fund raiser for the Bancroft PTA. This year, in addition to a large selection of beautiful trees, roping and wreaths, and tree stands will be available. Thanks to our MPD officers, SANTA will be arriving in a big red DCFD FIRE TRUCK and kids will get a chance to climb aboard. They will also have a special kids "make your own ornament" activity. The sale is located behind the Bancroft School at 18th and Newton Streets. Come early for best selection! Also, they can deliver within the neighborhood for a $5 donation. FAMILY PLACE: MPNA will be collecting donations for the Family Place at the next Community – Police meeting which will be held on Tuesday, December 14th at the Library at 7pm. Please bring new or gently used children’s clothing, toys, women’s clothing, shoes, etc. to donate. Operation LiveLink: Connect directly with an officer on duty in the neighborhood if you see suspicious activity or a crime in progress. First call 911 or 311. Then make your next call to the officer on duty – tel 202 689 4277 or 202 689 4278. Leave a detailed message if there is no answer.

ZOOLIGHTS EVENT
: Beginning Nov 28 and running through December 30 (Wed-Sun) the Zoo will shine with thousands of environmentally friendly lights and animated exhibits. Visitors will also be able to roast marshmallows, drink hot chocolate and cider, eat cookies, enjoy scavenger hunts. There will also be a chance to make crafts. $6.00 for members/$10 for non-members and $20 for a member family pack of 4 tickets. Kids under 2 are free.

Stoddard Baptist: Drop off groceries now until Wednesday by noon. December 14 is Stoddard Baptist open house. Will need help with checking coats. For this and other volunteer opportunities at Stoddard, please contact Robin VonDerpool 202- 328-7400 x 1362

Transportation Study: Next meeting on the Mt. Pleasant transportation study will be on 11/27 at the Library. If you would like to be informed and provide input please attend. You can also provide input at www.mtpleasantdc.org/forum (see Transportation Study category)

Marx Café and Heller’s owners Lambros and Alexs Duni have expanded their success and have opened another restaurant called Veranda on P, located 1100 P Street NW in Logan Circle

Tonic Restaurant opened a second Tonic at Quigley’s in Foggy Bottom soon to serve alcohol.

Haydee’s continues to run her second Haydee’s restaurant 6303 Georgia Avenue.

Marleny’s can now selling beer and wine to their customers. Please stop by their restaurant at 3201 Mt. Pleasant Street to enjoy their offerings of Salvadoran, Mexican and American foods. They also have added breakfast to their menu and open at 7 am if you are an early riser.

Voluntary Agreements/Alcoholic Bev Licenses: MPNA discussed changes to the VA’s with 6 of our 9 restaurants and signed new agreements with those who sought live entertainment. (4 signed new agreements –which includes Marleny’s and 2 remained the same). This was without protesting any of these 9 establishments’ ABC license renewals.

Corado’s Joseph Corado has served Mt. Pleasant for 25 years this year. Mr. Corado opened his Corado’s Restaurant, currently located at 3217 Mount Pleasant St., back in February 1982. Corado’s offers Guatemalan specialties. To celebrate his 25 years, he is making a special offer of a free drink with any entree between now and the end of January. Coupons to be distributed at the Nov.19, 2007 MPNA meeting.
