Could someone please describe the intended time line for reconstruction of the fire-ravaged buildings on MTP Street? I ask because if it is not anytime in the near, near future, then I believe it would be prudent to allow for a full lane of northbound traffic on our main street. As it stands, there appears to be no work going on. There is, however, an SUV constantly parked there. It looks like someone visits it daily, but for what reason escapes me.

While I do not know why that SUV is there, I presume (or I guess hope) that a private security guard is posted on that property 24/7. Actually I never noticed that it was the same SUV each time.

I'll tell you what's got me irritated with that whole thing is the pedestrian traffic flow (or lack of). I'm always on foot, and always with a stroller... going south on Mt. Pleasant on that side there is a stack of plywood and board right by the curb and on the side walk, I can never get over that area with the stroller without some ordeal. I finally got irritatted enough to try and move it when a person behind the gate told me to stop. I explained I couldn't get the carriage through and they said I shouldn't be moving the boards...

I would avoid that side except I'm either heading toward the bank directly on the other side of the mess or that's the shaded side on a 90 degree day!

If a stroller can't get through, a wheelchair can't either, which is unfair and illegal. Our sidewalks need to be accessible to all of our neighbors--a temporary blockage during construction can be justified, but if there's no schedule for the sidewalk to be reopened, that's unacceptable.

I think we should engage the appropriate ANC rep (would that be Greg? I can't keep the names/SMD#s straight) and be prepared to kick it up to Jim Graham if things don't change within 2-4 weeks.

Good point....I don't see how a wheelchair could possibly get through! they are wider than my stroller and I often have trouble (especially with the cinder blocks they have the fence poles weighted with - the blocks are typically jutting out into the walkway...very narrow).

i've called Jack M. - his number was listed as the ANC 1D contact - for possible information on this building's situation. I'll post a response, if he doesn't first.

Sorry, I don't know anything about the schedule for that building. I'll look into this sidewalk obstruction problem. BTW, I'm just back from a ten-day vacation in Canada, so I haven't been keeping up here.

I see what you mean. The "ramp" of boards is a mess, and the space between the fence and the jersey wall at the south end is way too narrow. I'll see what I can do. -- Jack

Got a reply already from DDOT Public Space, after sending photos of the location:

I have reviewed the photos and agreed the makeshift wheelchair ramp is not acceptable, we will send an inspector to make adjustments.

That's great, Jack, thanks! Funny they can actually refer to the pile of wood as a wheelchair ramp (make-shift or not!) Smile

thanks jack.

are we able to contact someone (the building owner?) to see what their plans are for this building? are they obligated to do something or can they simply let it sit like this indefinitely?

I'm sure they want to get back to their plans for development into condos. CM Graham might know more about the schedule. -- Jack

E-mail from DDOT today:

Inspector Salmon will [have] the contractor install [a] wheelchair ramp by tomorrow.

I see that the south end has already been widened out from its original 18 inches.
